Aikido is a Japanese martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to as O Sensei (meaning Great Teacher) by Aikido practitioners. Aikido utilises joint locks and manipulations as well as throws in order to overpower an attacker without causing them injury. As such Aikido utilises the aggressive intent and energy of an opponent to subdue them and does not depend on size or strength to accomplish this. The techniques of Aikido are effective against single or multiple attackers and are often taught using Japanese weapons such as the bokken (a wooden katana, or Japanese samurai sword) and jo (a Japanese short staff). Aikido also teaches effective relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and the enhancement of 'Ki', a Japanese word meaning life energy, power or spirit.

Why study Aikido?

Aikido is usually described as a non-aggressive martial art, which at first glance sounds a little contradictory. But in Aikido the emphasis is on control and restraint rather than inflicting injury upon your opponent or attacker. In practical terms this makes Aikido the only completely legal means of self-defence available in certain situations, for example hospital workers. In a hospital, situations can arise where a member of staff needs to defend themselves against an attacker but they are not allowed to do so by injuring that attacker. So other arts which might advocate strikes and throws as a means of defence would not necessarily be considered an appropriate means of defence. Kicking a violent patient in the head is not an appropriate action for a doctor to take, restraining them in a calm and effective manner is. This principle also extends to other professions where a similar situation may arise.

Often the best defence is simply to remain calm and not to panic. This is more often than not much more difficult than it sounds. In Aikido however there are practical exercises taught to increase awareness of tension in the body and increase the students ability to retain a calm mind even under pressure in difficult circumstances. As such much of the benefit of other practices such as yoga for example can be found within Aikido training, where they are effectively combined with practical self defence methods. Aikido is also unsurprisingly a good way to learn more about Japanese culture and history, and while Aikido as practiced in the western world is not the same as experiencing Japanese culture first hand in Japan itself (unless you are perhaps lucky enough to have a Japanese Aikido teacher), it is a good way to become more familiar with a special part of Japanese cultural heritage, namely its martial arts, or Budo as it is known in Japan.

What is Ki-Aikido?

Ki-Aikido is a particular group of Aikido styles that derive from Koichi Tohei Sensei 10th Dan. Tohei Sensei was the Chief Instructor of Aikido under its founder Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei and was awarded the highest possible rank in Aikido by O Sensei in the late 1960's. Ki-Aikido places emphasis on actively teaching relaxation in order to unify and coordinate mind and body. Unlike other martial arts Ki-Aikido has specific methods and teaching directed at helping the student to learn how to be calm and relaxed under pressure. Exercises are used to teach the student how to coordinate mind and body in a relaxed way and thus to achieve the most powerful and efficient ways of moving and using the body, it is with them one can defend oneself without any great physical exertion, this means that Ki-Aikido is a method of self defence which is able to be practiced by anyone regardless of gender, size, strength or disability. In addition to this the calmness and relaxation techniques are applicable to situations in daily life that do not involve self defence. For example, many people suffer from headaches as a result of tension in the neck and shoulders, this can arise from using a computer for long periods of time. The relaxation methods taught in Ki-Aikido can help enable a person to relax and thus avoid such problems and many other similar problems also.

About O Sensei

O Sensei was born in Tanabe on December 14th 1883 the only son of a local politician, he was a sickly child and was encouraged in physical pursuits such as swimming and sumo by his father. He would later serve in the army and fight in the Russo-Japanese war, all the while pursuing his studies of the martial arts such as Judo, Sumo, Shinkage Ryu and a variety of different styles of Ju-Jitsu, eventually he became a prospector in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. It was here that he first encountered the legendary Sokaku Takeda, a renowned martial artist who travelled Japan teaching his own style of Ju-Jitsu called Daito Ryu Aiki-Jitsu. Impressed by Takeda's obvious mastery Ueshiba became his student.

Some time later Ueshiba encountered a religious leader named Onisaburo Deguchi of the Omoto Kyo sect, it was he who encouraged Ueshiba to begin teaching the martial arts he had learned, and to teach them as a spiritual pursuit rather than a way to be only physically stronger. After a time Ueshiba became a well known martial arts teacher naming his art Aikido, meaning 'way of harmony', in 1942. He eventually retired to live and teach in the small country town of Iwama leaving his only son Kisshomaru in charge of running the organisation he had set up to spread the teaching of Aikido throughout the world, this organisation was called the Aikikai and its chief instructor was a man named Koichi Tohei (Tohei Sensei was awarded the highest possible rank in Aikido, 10th Dan, shortly before O Sensei's death).

O Sensei passed away on the 26th of April 1969 leaving his son in charge of the Aikikai, however, in the years directly after World War II there had been chaos in the then occupied Japan and teaching Aikido was difficult at best (especially seeing as the occupying Americans had banned all martial arts), during this time a few of O Sensei's more senior students began teaching independently of the Aikikai, this would eventually lead to them developing into new styles of Aikido, namely Yoshinkan Aikido under Gozo Shioda Sensei and Shodokan (sometimes called Tomiki) under Kenji Tomiki Sensei. In 1974 the chief instructor of the Aikikai, Koichi Tohei resigned his position in order to begin his own organisation Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, which focused on teaching Aikido and mind and body coordination principles, often referred to as Ki-Aikido in the west.

Banyu Hatten Aikido was inaugurated in 1987 (its Official Birthday is 1st May) under the guidance of Geoff Flather Sensei. Geoff Flather Sensei has studied numerous martial arts for the last fifty years, he first began studying aikido in 1967 in the North East with Kazuo Chiba Sensei. In the late 1970s he became a member of the Ki Federation of Great Britain (lead by Ken Williams Sensei), practicing with Wasyl Kolesnikov. Kolesnikov Sensei left the Ki Federation in 1982 and Geoff went with him when Kolesnikov established the Kolesnikov School of Mind and Body Development and Aikido (KSMBDA).

In the mid 1980s a group of people decided to leave the KSMBDA, and in March of 1987 Geoff was asked to lead this group, the group looked at the possibility of joining other aikido associations but eventually decided to remain autonomous and took the name suggested to Geoff by the Japanese Embassy: 'Banyu Hatten Aikido' which represents the attitude of the association and in English means: 'The Universal Development of the Way of Harmony of Mind and Spirit'.

Shortly after BHA was established and had had its first summer school, Geoff was invited to study with Tomio Otani Sensei. Tomio Otani was a student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei (who had introduced aikido to the UK in 1955) and studied aikido, kendo, iaido and other arts with him. Upon meeting Geoff, Otani Sensei asked if he could teach him. Geoff accepted, became his student and began travelling frequently to London from Devon to train with Otani Sensei, up until Otani Sensei passed away in the 1990s.

Towards the end of his life Otani Sensei retired from teaching budo, however he continued to teach Geoff and Geoff's students, travelling from London to Devon to do so. A respected master of the Japanese sword, Otani Sensei's influence on Geoff and BHA is still apparent and reflected by the large weapons curriculum taught within BHA.

Since its birth, BHA has provided its own assessment syllabus and developed its own instructors through different levels, until reaching the instructor level of 'Sensei'. Geoff Flather Sensei has been a full-time professional aikido teacher since 1987, and has been developing BHA's teaching methods and training syllabus since that time.

BHA is affiliated to Aikido Yuishinkai International headed by Koretoshi Maruyama Sensei. In 2004 Maruyama Sensei and the Chief Instructor of Aikido Yuishinkai International Michael Williams Sensei visited the UK as part of Maruyama's world tour for that year. After the visit he awarded BHA's Principal Geoff Flather Sensei the rank of 7th Dan. As a result of BHA's affiliation to Aikido Yuishinkai the association's name was changed to Banyu Hatten Aikido Yuishinkai.

Banyu Hatten Aikido Yuishinkai's stated aims are:

  • To cultivate a heightened awareness of mind and body working in harmony through Banyu Hatten Aikido;
  • To cultivate a greater awareness of the infinite through practice of calmness, relaxation and Ki power;
  • To provide its students with a means to achieve good health through mind and body exercises;
  • To provide its students with a non-aggressive, progressive grading syllabus that may be used as an effective form of defence;
  • To pursue unity and develop within Aikido, without barriers of the mind.
